No change after dosfsck. I would understand that a Runnix download could
have been corrupted (though one would have hoped the sha1 would have
prevented that). What I don't understand is how xrunnix boots into the fully
updated version? I guess I can swap the boot parameters for runnix and
xrunnix, and see if that works. Sounds a bit like a hack to me. I also don't
know where they are, but I'll see if I can find them.

This is correct. Then 'runnix' should boot normally, otherwise again a
corrupted download, or your CF card could be borked :-(
You can try to repair it with:

'dosfsck -av /dev/sda1'
