re: ASTlinux-1.1.0-asterisk-11.2.1 Does Not Find Broadcom Gigabit NIC on HPt5740e Thin Client, part 3.
I hope you don't mind my resurrecting this thread after all this time, but it took me that long to make a few more tests. As you might recall the problem is that the current ASTlinux release does not recognize the Ethernet NIC (Broadcom BCM57780) built in to the HP T5740e Thin Client. First, to answer Lonnie's question about cost effectiveness this box, I have to say that it is not yet quite in the sweet spot. The T5730's are more there: Mr. Lee Horton at "Intelli-Tech" (909-394-5188x215) had a pallet load and was selling them one-at-a-time on eBay for ~$50, and they came with the PCI expansion unit! (I fear they're all gone by now.) I have qty 2 T5740e's (w/ PCI slots, which I bought separately), and they set me back about $200/ in new condition. But they are very nice; have about twice the core and flash as the T5730's and come with Win7 embedded. However they are not compatible with ASTlinux because the "tg3" driver complied into ASTlinux-1.1.0-asterisk-11.2.1 is ancient (tg3-3.110, 2010apr09) and because there is no "make" command present in that release, preventing substitution of the latest driver (tg3-3.124c, 2013jan26). Reading the release notes for that driver give me every reason to think that it would solve the problem. So, how do we: (1) get tg3-3.124c compiled into the next release of AST; or (2) get the "make" command added to the next release of AST; or (3) how would one "make" a kernel-loadable module for the AST kernel, and do that on a different machine with a different kernel (say, Ubuntu) that has the "make" command? I believe that any one of these things would solve this problem. Thank you for your consideration.
