The same problem here with a D-Link DWL-G520 Rev. B4 which sports a AR5212 802.11 (b/g) type chipset [no 802.11 a]. Unfortunately, you haven't posted the PCI id of your card. In my case it's 168c:0013 which to my surprise is labeled 'OK' on the compatibility page of the ath5k driver at http://www.linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/ath5k#supportedchips The same card works flawlessly with madwifi apart from suspend issues. The access point I'm using is WEP encrypted. Moreover, I'm on Fedora rawhide x86_64 running kernel 2.6.23.9-86.fc8.
