Agreed. All we need to do is decide one way or the other what the spec should say.
That said, I certainly wouldn't object to any text warning people not to do it, or explicitly mentioning that you have to call the equivalent of String.trim().
Recommending the former would draw attention to the issue and perhaps encourage the latter. (Or make both explicit, with SHOULD and MAY).
