Lets see. If I remember right, there's another room above the room that branches off into the third statue. The third one is off of that room, I think to the right.
Assault Freak, this is where using translation really helps. The cave is the extra dungeon of the game, so it doesn't ever come into play during the plot. Translating, you're actually told to go back to the temple for your next plot point. Then you go east to the volcano. You can't even unlock the cave to the south of the temple until you've been to the third area, the lake, and if you're playing on easy, you can't unlock it at all.
