Re: braillemone a pokemon port for visually impaired players
Regarding the grass, I could probably put in a sound like the water, where the grass is blowing, so you can hear it from afar.
And I plan on making the routes a bit simplified. Not to the point that they're juvenile, but so that they're easier to navigate. Wider passages and all that. I'm also planning on implementing a system where you can press a button and it tells you what direction the map goes, so you know the general direction. Not sure how I can implement a turning mechanic but if I keep maps simple you wouldn't really need one (oh, a 90 degree angle here, the town is north west from here, and here is a wall, so then I guess I turn left then, right?). I'll probably figure out more than that but I'm just throwing ideas around.
I've played games that I've relied extensively on guides and lemme just say this right now - it's a pain in the ass. Really. At least I have functioning retinas that allow me to read numbers, since those don't change from language to language. Since you can't see the numbers of the stats and all that you don't really get the full experience. Sure, you know that Snorlax can take more hits than a fearow, and you can tell them apart because of the noises they make, but do you actually know their stats? Do you know their better options? Do you know that Snorlax has 524 maximum HP at level 100 while fearow can only have a maximum of 334 hit points? Pokémon have IVs so that mixes up their stats too, Snorlax could have 520 hp, or 510 or whatever. And natures out right multiply stats, either by .9 or 1.1, which can affect stats at higher levels greatly. Also, figuring out what moves to use is largely trial and error, and you might not be aware of when secondary effects occur, until say, OH I guess I did poison that pidgey after all. Sure, you can play it but it's almost kinda like a parlor trick - you don't know how it works. With the power of knowing you could actually play the game like it was originally intended. That's what I intend to do with this game. Sure, you can play the regular games but how about knowing what you're actually doing?
