Whether this is a good thing or bad depends on several factors.
If Optelec wasn't doing that well, the merger with Freedom Scientific may keep products on the market that would otherwise have disappeared.
On the other hand, it sounds like both companies make video magnifiers, so perhaps Freedom Scientitfic wants to add Optelec's technology to their own and develop some new products from the blend.
Or maybe Freedom Scientific is just looking to clear the field of its competition, if that's the case, then I don't favor this merger at all. The choices the blind and visually impaired community have are already slim, the last thing we need is somebody killing off what choices we do have.
Before I lost my vision and was just entering the vision impaired community, I looked at video magnifiers. Their price kept me from buying one, but I can say that there were quite a few models from quite a few vendors. This merger in no way puts Freedom Scie ntific in danger of becoming a monopoly. AI Squared, the makers of the ZoomText screen magnifier also make video magnifiers, and I don't see them going anywhere any time soon.
The way I look at it is that this is just a merger, not an out right buy out. What that means is that Freedom Scientific and Optelec are joining forces. I don't think Freedom Scientific will have any more control over Optelec than it did before the merger. But then I'm no expert on mergers and buy outs, so I could be way wrong.
The most I can say for now is to sit back and watch to see what happens.
The thread title says that this is another merger that Freedom Scientific is involved in. Does anyone recall what they did after the last merger they were in?
