I haven't played it and don't know what the beeping is... but I watched my dad play Abe's Odyssey long ago, so the first thing that comes to mind is: does Oddworld have voice commands? Abe's Odyssey involved a lot of rescuing people from what I will euphamistically refer to as 'factories', using Swamp-like voice commands to lead them around.
IIUC, Oddworld is part of the same series; I don't know if there is sufficient overlap in mechanics for this to be useful information, though.
