I much prefer storyline driving games myself as well. That said my experience with them is limited to mostly RPGs, where playtime is greatly elevated by the need to build characters.
I don't think playtime is the soul factor which distinguishes a big game from a small one, but it definitely plays a big roll. There are exceptions (Shenmue comes to mind, which is pretty much an interactive movie with limited gameplay elements) but it's almost a genre all by itself.
For me, it's rewarding to get a nice cutscene after going through a dungeon which took a couple of hours, had a boss which took multiple attempts and required some grinding far more than it would be to have it just handed to you interrupted periodicly by a few moments of gameplay.
That said, speedrunning is impressive and takes hundreds of playthroughs of a given game in order to do it successfully.
