Trying to Learn Chinese, At the end of my rope
Hi. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. I want to continue to learn Chinese, I know a few basic greetings, but I want to take it further. I was surprised that NVDA supports Mandarin, but a robotic voice won't get me anywhere in a tonal language. I don't work, so buying TTS isn't an option, and I don't have admin rights, so I can't use the speech platform voices either. On top of that, how will a blind person who is not a native be able to recognize the different characters and meanings, since one character can have several meanings? I have two questions. First, do you know of any NVDA add-ons that provide reasonably accurate Chinese pronunciation? Second, how does a blind person who isn't a native learn Chinese, since the language is sight-based? I use Windows 8, and I know how to add the keyboard, but I don't know the difference between traditional or simplified characters, how to write and learn pinyin, especially when the screen re ader doesn't know how to interpret the symbols, or how to find reading materials that I can make progress with. I don't want to force myself to memorize all the characters by rote, because of the meanings issue, and that I don't have a viable way to tell them apart. Thanks for reading, and I hope you write back soon.
