If I remember rightly like Kingdom of Loathing you need to specifically sign on for pvp, it won't be available by default and also you need to unlock some specific areas of the game through the story first. I also don't know if pvp is literally fighting other players in combat, or whether like KoL it's more a comparison of stats type of thing.
I'm afraid since it's not something I looked into in detail you might have to check the wiki.
