I guess you could consider it a kind of reverse Spectrogram. It usually processes images in pulses which can either be processed very quickly or slowly, depending on the users preference. In this particular use case though I expect a toggle for a single sweep or continuous play would be preferable because of the interference it would cause with the ambient audio cues and beacons. Overhead can be a bit of an issue though without some optimization, the process can usually only handle low resolution images in a timely fashion as a result and typically has to downscale, the vOICe for example can handle a max resolution of 176x144, my own usually hovers around 64x64 or 128x128.
As I mentioned my Audiocraft prototype has a working binary demonstrating the concept, I also have a minimap implementation with my [AudioRTS] demo. I'm not sure if its suited to a fast paced game though, it may depend on the rendering speed. I think something like navigating spaces in games like Gone Home, SOMA, or other slower paced games might be more suitable.
