@roelvdwal: I'm not seeking to replace any establishede conventions for menu designs, nor am I arguing that an interactive menu area is going to be designed with efficiency in mind. My idea for an area-based menu setup is purely for uniqueness, with a good degree of immersion and atmosphere in mind. If the menu looks like the game and behaves like the game, then players are automatically introduced to the world. Mentioning the menu wasn't the point of my argument, however, it was just a supporting reason why we shouldn't expect developers to constrain themselves to a staid design.
