Re: Describing pictures for blind people
Hello Guitarman. I was hoping to get feedback from someone who is blind since birth because for me this is the hardest to relate to. I did some research online and read a couple of articles of people who never had any vision and all of them seemed quite baffled by the notion of colors. For them it is such a foreign concept yet for me it is like breathing. It's just there. It always was.
I'm intrigued by your answer though. I would be happy to ask you some further questions if you don't mind. For example the description of the setting sun. The sun is not something you can touch and it seems hard to describe it in analogies because it is a very unique sight in my opinion. I'm wondering how this could possibly help you picturing the scene? I would imagine that for you the setting sun is about the disappearing warmth you feel on your face, the smell of the approaching evening and specific sounds that are unique to the time of day. Shouldn't I rather try to capture these sensations in the description even though these are just born of my own mind and have not much to do with the picture actually described?
Let me try. You are standing in the middle of a large forest. The forest seems to be never ending because you can hear no other sounds but the ones native to this peaceful place. You can hear a soft wind slowly taking up pace from the south. It is rustling huge leaves on the tall and slender trees around you. Birds are singing their evening songs while the warmth of day slowly disappears into the cold of night. You are standing on a narrow trail made of old withered stone overgrown by moss and partially covered by leaves. They broken stones that pave the road still feel slightly warm from the disappearing sun. Even though night approaches you feel safe here.
The project I'm working on is not actually something that describes pictures dynamically but it is something that is designed to bring a special kind of gamin g experience to blind people that relies heavily and often primarily on pictures and images.
