Re: USB Midi Keyboards, Do they have latency issues?
There are two different forms of VST, really. The sound they generate are done by one of two ways.
For VST's like Guitar RIg, Ozone, and Waves GTR, you need to send an audio signal through them to process. THis is done with audio interface inputs, most commonly. They can be midi controlled, to say change functions, or even control parameters, such as volume, wah, and phasers, etc.etc.etc...
The other form well it's more of a VST synth, also known as soft synth, and they use signals from a midi keyboard (connected via Midi, USB or however), to generate sound. If your keyboard has a midi out jack on it, and your audio interface has a Midi in, yes, you can use that to connect it to your studio setup, however, it will not generate keyboard sounds, just send midi signals. This same method applies for electronic drum kits as well. VST's that fall into this category are Kontakt, Absynth, Omnisphere, Addictive Drums, etc.
If you want to connect a keyboard directly to the studio and hear it's onboard sounds, then you'd connect it with the audio to the interface.
Sorry if this is an elementary post for some, but this will hopefully avoid confusion down the road for some of those out there starting out and learning.
