Well, of course you could just use Thunderbird. The NNTP support is usable, if a bit flaky. And in an age where it seems (to me, anyway) that Usenet is more and more deprecated, I can't really recommend you go with a standalone client anyway (although I'm happy to be corrected, of course).
I read news the way I read most things: via email. Mailman's NNTP gateway sucks what I need, and I process it by IMAP. But that's unidirectional.
