The few times I have wanted a usenet client, I have been really happy with MicroPlanet Gravity from:

It is more functional than thunderbird, and I find it faster and less flaky. Unfortunately, It's starting to show its age, though, with no new updates since 2010. Though it does run on 64 bit Windows 7.
