That's because most manamon from Manamon 1 sucked, and because Mortrex was really only weak to holy. Also, I think its train points were invested largely into speed, so it was pretty fast. I found eventually that the best way to take down Mortrex was to just hit it heavily. In manamon 1, this meant shit like Bubble Burst, Quake, Aura Master (because it was neutral back then), Black Bite, etc. If you were fortunate enough to have Blaze Rampage, Draco Breaker, even Drench or Superspark or Earthquake, you might be in a better spot, but many of the manamon who had those moves didn't really have great stats, or didn't survive well...so it was something of a trade-off. Mortrex was quite good in the first game because stuff didn't really have the oomph to take it out reliably in two hits. Now stuff can definitely do that more often, and there are better, stronger moves to do it with.
