Re: Experiences with Infocom
Well Ian, that's an interesting thought and funnily enough "put" I find one of the most annoying verbs in the if lexicon. However my problem is that if it was extensive enough to make sense it would likely also have to be long and clunky to read and probably not likely to serve a player well in the game sinse the player wouldn't be able to remember all the commands in every situation they would be required. I've seen several if games that provide a cursery help, but that's rarely been of use.
Myself, I prefer the limited system where a player is simply directly given a list of verbs to choose from, or wheere a player's actions are simplified by just being asked to use ageneric "use" or "use with" type of verb as happens in games like the inquisitor or Eamon.
For example there is a section in the Eamongame thraw's ring where the player has a stick with a hook and comes across a t iny hole in one of the flag stones on the floor.
In traditional infocom style if this could be a real beast of a puzzle. "hook hole with stick?" "open stone with stick" "lever stone with stick"
In the eamon game however simply "use hook with hole" is all that's needed, and sinse "use" is the generic verb for most item manipulations in Eamon it's not so difficult for the player.
