That's not going to solve the problem if I distribute my program.
I feel like the fact that my code is calling SDL_StopTextInput() and then calling SDL_StartTextInput pretty much right after that is responsible for this, since this didn't happen in my test where I just called SDL_StartTextInput() and echoed the typed characters.
I wanted to save a little bit of performance, but I guess you can't have everything.
