Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?
Correct that Google Translate for some reason automatically detects those characters as Japanese, because those characters actually make up a Japanese name. So either way, t's not English. Please be mindful.
@217, thanks for the videos. This is why I said that all the issues I have are not with everyday Chinese citizens or people living there, it's the governmental system and their outlook I don't like. I love Chineseculture, as it's prt of my own heritage and I'm very proud of it. And I think of the 1.5 bilion or so people in China, more than 1 billion are fine, hardworking, upstanding people who live quite happy lives. But the problems are also equally real. You're right that ancient times in some aspects, were actually more open and free than modern times are now. Not just in China, but in many other countries as well.
@226, chances of the FBI coming to your home and you disappearing are not nearly as high in the US as it is in China. People say things against the government and noone even notices unless it is extreme or actually dangerous.
@228, your assessment is pretty much correct. Say what you want in private, or at least, in private around people you trust. You may not necesarily get killed if you get caught for making an offhand comment, but fines are definitely there and probably a mild questioning. In public, whether that's in person or online, it's better to keep those opinions to yourself. I had one friend from Canada who, while in China doing a teaching practicum said that she was quletly advised not to say the reason she kept windows closed in her classroom despite the heat was because of the bad air quality outside. Not because she wasn't allowed to say it as such, but because it wasn't good to say something without knowing who is listening. This lines up with what my relatives say who have lived there the majority of their lives before moving here, friends as well.
@everyone else, 226 is pretty much a good example of what your average Chinese citizen thinks of the government, free speech, etc. This may seem foreign to many, especially people in the west, but it's quite normal for people in many, many Asian countries. Also, a fair point was made about Western culture getting into everything. So before we scream assimulation, let's take a look in the mirror...
