About story progression, you have to play a combination of battles and other stories to advance scenes and unlock more paths. IF you can only replay the same scene with Kurabe, try doing it with making other choices instead of the ones you made he first time.
I haven't toyed around much with upgrading sentinels yet, so I'm not sure about that. Stirlock might be able to chime in if he sees this.
