Just so people know, when you make a new character you should choose to be a cadet. This means you can start playing right away with some limitations, you can submit a profile when ready and when approved the limitations will disappear.
Salvage is always good as well as courier work, but if you want to be paid immediately rather than on the Friday mail deliveries is a good alternative to couriers.
Also here's a hint, make your first battlesuit a league front line soldier. The tier 1 suits only get two modules and you'll need one for a weapon and the other for armour, so take the front line soldier with a projectile module and medium armour module. Then get the pistol, the medium armour 1, buy a full load of ammo and a full set of repair drones. Don't do what I did and struggle along with an AEU light combatant. The Fringe suit has a lot more weapon options but they don't have the ammo to be practical as a main weapon, and you really don't want to give up your armour so you'd be stuck with projectiles and light armour anyhow.
