The ram is fine, but the hard disk is backed by in-memory caches for performance and not all writes are atomic. What happens with unexpected power outages is that they will interrupt writes to disk and then you get corrupted files.
A UPS isn't that big. Mine is under the desk against the wall. It's like the thickness of a phone book and sits like if the book were on the spine or something. A little bit tall, but it's just there and I can forget about it. Wouldn't say space is an obstacle. I don't know which one I have offhand but it's lasted for years and years now.
