On today's fast processors? Come on, you really think you've got it bad? I ran Gentoo on a Pentium II 400 MHz box, and it made me very, very happy.
Of course, it's also true that fast processors mean you have fewer reasons to actually compile all your software from source. And there's just something so very cute about those modest, less-optimised binaries that have been compiled against every f***ing library that exists--just in case, you know, you'd like to interface your email client to a SQL database.
