Just trying to get my brain to understand it now - 

So in the SB/Porter the preamp increases and decreases volume before
the DAC, the DAC then adds the same level of noise to what ever the
signal (ah ha! hence suggestions of running SB on full to minimize the
signal to noise ratio)

So if we have an anenuator or hifi preamp on the analogue o/p of the SB
the noise and signal go up and down together...Yes!!
I think I've got it..... :D  hopefully....?

So I would guess the SNR of the normal SB when using its own preamp
stage is not really noticable......?

And of course The Porter Even Less :)
