Sounds like what you're aiming at is a minimalist setup with just a network player and pair of speakers. In that case, I'd have thought the correct approach is to use powered speakers, which will have amps appropriate to their design. Building amps into the player will always be a compromise, because they will be called upon to drive a variety of different speakers.
