yes you'll probably be right there.

but resampling a 24 bit 88.2 kHz source up to 24 bit 96 kHz with all
the features "on" (high quality sampling and 32 bit floating integer
for calculations), I assume that the target file is at least sounding
the same as the source.

may be just a little bit "smoother" due to the little extra wave
smoothing...

there are those dithering algorythms which "guess" the missing bits and
calculate the (speaking of 88.2 kHz source!) very tiny, missing
spaces...
