Load Linux on the box under the desk and hookup the external usb drive. Load Slimserver on it and configure Samba
Run iTunes on your Desktop XP machine and hookup the cd burner to it. Rip music on your XP machine and drop it straight on the disk on the headless linux machine using Network Neighbourhood (or whatever twee name Bill calls it these days). Administer the linux box using a web browser or PuTTY.
