I'm in the purist camp as well -- leave the signal path as unadulterated as possible.
That said, I recently purchased a Velodyne SMS-1 to equalize my subwoofer. It had some nasty peaks betwen 30-60Hz. I've got much cleaner bass now. But bear in mind, I'm only manipulating the 20-80Hz range.
