Yes, it's a ridiculous, scandalous situation. One of the worst examples is the "remaster" phenomenon...my experience agrees with the article in that many remasters are far worse than the original. The music business should hang its head in shame that it milks the public with this type of thing.
If there's a choice of CD releases by default I buy the oldest one I can find. Happily, that's usually cheaper.
