What are your TP setting and exactly how are you using the TP? I think
you might need more information. A better comparison might be to keep
things as equal as possible meaning that the 16/44 be a rip from the
exact same master as the 24/96. There are some download sites that
actually have this option.

In some listening tests I was part of, I couldn't tell the difference
in most rock music whether it was 16 or 24. Classical and Jazz that was
from a very well engineered master, there "seems" to be some value in
24/96.

I am of the opinion after doing a bunch of listening that it mainly
comes down to the type of music, the quality of the recording, and how
well it was engineered, really meaning how much was really left alone
to let the music come through. Recording that are pushed around to much
by the engineer sound about the same whether 16 or 24/96 in my listening
and my opinion. YMMV.

And this is just a personal opinion and observation, but monitor
speakers tend to leave a lot to be desired when trying to make these
comparasions. The bass is limited by design and really starts to roll
off big time around 75Hz and is 5 to 6 dB down at 50Hz. Don't get me
wrong, Harbeth makes a good speaker and monitors have their place. I'm
just of the opinion that for listening tests and especially something
this close, a full range loudspeaker is really needed if one is going
to be able to pin down audible differences.
