While I have no inside information, I'm sure this is correct.

I remember as a kid getting a tour of the Washington Post. Even back 
then, they said that subscriptions did not even pay for the newsprint 
(the blank paper) and that everything else, presses, ink, delivery, let 
alone writers, was paid by advertising.

The problems of print media are well known. I still subscribe to TAS and 
Stereophile, but there really isn't much of value in either.
