The most important thing is to make sure all your digital cables are level, because 0's are heavier than 1's and if the cables are allowed to run downhill, the 0's will actually overtake the 1's after about 1m or so. This is the real reason that optical sounds so different from co-ax s/pdif - optical is more slippery so the 0's squeeze past the 1's more easily.
