It is quite possible that the psycho acoustic models used by mp3
introduce some effects that are pleasing to the ear even if they are
not accurately  reproducing the material.

I can imaging mp3 sounding better even wo blind tests in  some
situations. Much loudness war produced music sound absolutely horrible,
to filter out the high end and make it "fuzzy" might mellow out some
edginess , less cumbersome than putting a sock over the earphones.
