Don't know for sure, but I've read/heard that some of the services
(sky.fm, pandora, MOG, spotifiy, etc.) use a bit of extra "compression"
in their music to give it a bit of an oomph. You're probably familiar
with the "sound wars" where most modern music is mastered terribly to
give it an apparent "oomph" when played.  This is why my old CDs have
replaygain values of -1.00, +.58, etc. while newer stuff has replaygain
values of -10.x, -9.x, etc.

So it could very well be that at first blush, the sky stuff sounds
better than your rips, but it's probably not a good thing they've done
for long term listening.
