Agreed, I should have woven that fact into my post. We are all
susceptible to self-dlusion in many facets of life. My approach here
has been to take my time, tweak slowly, and listen over the long haul.
My primary "metrics" are (1) am I more (or less) eager to listen? (2) I
usually read while I listen... if I'm putting my book down real often
because the music is so compelling (or so awful) I pay attention to
that, and (3) is the music convincing, reasonably close to "real"?

I am sure of three things:
1. I have certainly fell prey numerous times to self-delusion for a
few hours or days while working on my system.
2. The music in my house would never have reached its current level
had I not tweaked slowly and listened a long time between changes.
3. We can sense things in simple physical systems that currently have
not yielded to physical measurement with the best equipment currently
available. I do science for a living (PhD Biochemistry, BA Chemistry
and Math, 34 years work experience and still chugging), and have
personal experience with a common macroscopic physical system (e.g.,
two pounds of common "stuff") where every accomplished artisan can
clearly distinguish "good" from "bad" product but--so far--even the
best scientific intstrumentation cannot. Believe me, we have TRIED.
This experience makes it easy for me to believe that--so far--we can
hear things that we haven't figured out how to measure (either can't
measure yet or don't--yet--know what to measure).

I've said more or less all I have to say on this topic, I don't have
time to post much, so I'll get back to work now. Good luck to all of
you on your quest for excellent music in your homes!

Pete
