There are a few different settings re the use of gain tags in flac files pre amp volume on SB3 ? 6dB louder sure sound obviously better , gain tags can also explains some experiences wav vs flac if the files where converted on a computer But besides the rudimentary effort to have the settings the same on both servers before comparing :P You are right there really is no mechanism for the server to influence the sound given equal settings , it all ends up in the player buffer anyway just pull the ethernet cable and listen to the last 30 seconds of anything.
