Simply, the lower the attenuator setting the better it sounds, best being 0db. So I don't think what I'm hearing is amp synergy. What I am hearing is either electrical crud, or it's the output stage performing better with more headroom. Either way, my impressions do not square with what is expected, I agree ... but they remain my impressions nevertheless.
