Since you are still using initrd instead of initramfs, I must ask you
again.
How did you identify that switchroot succeeded?
Your kernel may execute init process after your linuxrc/switchroot
aborts. But it may depends upon your parameters.

Do you mean that you took your aufs apart from its branches.
