Thanks Stuart,

Brian Sommerville reports that the eTrex use 350mw at 3volt (more needed
to reduce the gliders 12v down to 3v) and the better Map76s model
consumes 450mw at 12volt. If you need the backlight on, then power
consumed is about 30% greater. I think iPaqs use about the same?

Now, is this a little or a lot? Your experience dictates that it is a
little, especially if your ship has a second battery on an A/B switch.

| Just my 2 cents worth, probably not much more, I use a palm Vx running
| soaring pilot( 8 hours on its own batteries) and a garmin
etrex(22hours from
| the specs, have never needed it that long), it happily directs me
around a
| task while giving me th confidence to fly further knowing I can always
point
| myself at home with little trouble. Just a pity that the other day it
| couldn't manufacture a little more lift to get me round my first
300km,
| although it did help me decide that 300km was a little beyond me on
this
| particular day and settle for 286km and got me home.
|
| This just goes to show that your decision on inflight computing does
not
| have to punish or even sacrifice any of the battery capacity that is
vital
| for the vario and radio.
