Airspace breaches are taken seriously as a safety issue. Each breach
results in an incident report which I've been following up with the
pilots concerned, and pilots are left under absolutely no doubt about
the seriousness of the matter. More than one breach from a pilot will
result in the pilot's exit from the comp, no if's, but's or maybe's.

As a rule, I don't believe a competition safety officer should give
a crap about the rules of the comp; If something is unsafe or illegal
it's unsafe or illegal regardless of what the rules or scoring equations
say. A safety officer needs to make decisions independently (although
consultively) and, one hopes, intelligently.

Which, more specifically, means that an airspace breach is a serious
operational issue regardless of what the non-operational competition
rules have to say about it.

I can see how someone who has absolutely nothing to do with what's
going on here could form the view that someone doesn't "take airspace
seriously," but perhaps a less combative and less patronizing approach
that such a person could take might be to enquire, "Do you guys take
airspace seriously?" before rendering judgement.
