Just a small philosophical question:

If a pilot says something on the radio, and nobody hears him, is he still
there?

Subject: [Aus-soaring] New Non Controlled Aerodrome ops

Hi All,

I attended to CASA Class D and non-towered aerodrome ops seminar.

The chnages to radio procedures anp ops seem sensible, more onus on the
pilot doing what is safe and sensible.
The anecdote was recalled that around Caboolture and adjacent
aerodromes, the CTAF was so congested with calls that no-one could
transmit.

Also there was a request for brief non-waffling radio calls using
correct phraseology where possible or simple English. Use radio calls to
help with alerted see and avoid.

For those gliders operating out of mixed operations (a lot more of these
on the east coast I assume), there needs to be some knowledge of where
the RPT will do their instrument approaches. These charts are easily
available on the airservices website.

If giving a position report, it is better to use a height and bearing
from the destination, not a local landmark (that itinerant aircraft do
not know about "I am over Fred's house at 1,500'"), and not an
instrument approach point (that VFR pilot's may not know where it is
"Passing initial approach fix on the NDB"), and try to provide an honest
estimate of arrival time (if possible i.e. if doing a final glide).

Just need to keep our power brethren educated that gliders cannot
maintain a constant circuit height!

Any other comments re the new procedures?

Michael
