Hi Urs,

I'm also puzzled by this.

Since the EW flight recorder is an IGC approved device, it meets the IGC
specification and therefore any cable wired to this spec should work,
whether it was designed specifically for EW or for any other IGC approved
Flight Recorder.

As you correctly say, it is an IGC requirement that pins 1-2 and 7-8 are
paralleled - the reason as I recall it is for compatibility between 6 and 8
pin RJ plugs.

If it is true that this paralleling defeats the reverse polarity protection
in the EW then it follow that EW has in effect got NO reverse polarity
protection, because all cables created to the IGC spec are the same.

The alternative explanation is that supplied EW cables don't have this
parallel wiring and therefore don't conform to the IGC spec.

Cheers

Tim

1) IGC Flight Recorder specifications require pin 1&2 and pin 7&8
on the RJ-45 connector of a IGC compliant cable to be in parallel...

2) There is no such thing as a "FLARM cable" or "FLARM connector".
FLARM has never shipped any assembled cables.

Am I missing something?

Those of using EWMicrorecorders should be very careful to NEVER
plug a FLARM connector into the EW by mistake.

The EW has built in reverse polarity protection but the FLARM cable
by paralleling pins 1 and 2 and pins 7 and 8 on the connector defeats this.

Take care! Damage by this method constitutes misuse and is not
covered by warranty. The damage is quite distinctive.
