Every touchscreen device has relatively poor brightness because of the
several layers required to detect and operate the touches. I have not seen
an Ipad but I see plenty of people in the street squinting at their iPhones
on a sunny day.

Most such devices have also had to make serious compromises between battery
life and brightness.

A device that has not been specifically designed for the ambient conditions
of a glider cockpit on a sunny day will never be bright enough. The design
parameters won't have required it because the design focus groups would
prefer battery life to sunlight visibility by 1000 to 1.

If you want something that is bright enough in every possible situation and
without special attention to shading, you should buy a specialised gliding
instrument such as Altair, Clearnav, LX8000/9000 and the like. It is
notable that none of these instruments use touchscreens, and all are
designed to use external power sources.

Cheers

iPhone / iPad glide computer available soon:
http://tinyurl.com/iPhone-iGlide (German, no English translation yet)
They demo'ed it at AERO in Germany this year. Looks very slick, but the
iPhone may be somewhat too small for it...
Normally I would not approve of any touchy screeny thingies for flying, but
they found some neat solutions.

On the other hand: The OUDIE is very well known technology, both in hard-
and software and is available now.

Enjoy
Urs

I can support Mike's comments - OUDIE is a PNA (Personal Navigational
Assistant, aka Car GPS) with a bundled licence for the PNA version of SeeYou
mobile. The main difference between SeeYou mobile for a PNA and for a PDA
is that the PNA version operates entirely through the touchscreen whereas
the PDA version makes use of buttons as well as touchscreen.

Personally I use an HP312 car navigator running SeeYou mobile. It took a
bit of work to set up this combination using instructions from the SeeYou
website, which would have been removed by buying the bundled OUDIE setup.
The total cost of my kit was a bit less than the OUDIE but not a lot.

I don't know whether there is a version of XCSoar that runs on a car
navigator, but if there is then that could lower the cost as well.

Placement in the glider, removal of terrain colours and the use of larger
and blacker fonts (all of which are simple config choices in SeeYou mobile)
solved the visibility issue for me and in this respect I think all PNA's
would be about the same. It can be fine, but don't expect to just throw it
in anywhere and be able to see it in bright sunlight.

These things are not Altairs or LX8000's, but they are also not the same
price. I guess you take your choice...

It runs Seeyou mobile AFAIK. It is actually a Chinese manfactured car
GPS. Here's what I heard from a friend who contacted the SeeYou guys.

"I have just now been speaking with Andre Kolaj about the Oudie. He
was not evasive at all about the brightness of the screen etc and
told me that it is an imported car GPS from China and that if I
wanted it to be cheap I could get one and install the soft ware and
then put up with getting the cables for the glider etc = BUT he said
that the brightness is actually only about 300 lumens and sort of the
same as any car GPS. Of some use but not brilliant to quote him."
