I like the fact that the gulls are smaller than those on the book cover:

It's good that the chapter covers be a visually less dominant than the front cover (is that the right term?). Thinking along those lines, I just resized the OOo logo by half in each direction. I also made the gray bars thiner and stretched the vertical one (left column).
Fir illustration purposes, I also added a sample title and subtitle. The idea is for these to be ther in the final template:

The bottom looks empty to me, especially compare to the top. Maybe I am alone. Could we move the gray bar down and put the title on top of it?
I made a copy here. I also slightly made the title bigger. I just didn't like the amount of white space.
Is this better or worse? It looks a little more like the book cover, but again I don't know if this is better or worse.
