Well, a library is entitled to improve its API, especially in a well reasoned way, surely. (Others do it, when the benefits merit the change.) If anyone hasn't archived a copy of the library source together with the project using it, then any version-related surprise is purely self inflicted. Only the merits of the change remain then, as a basis for possible objection. These improvements earn only thanks from me.
