Hi Darcey, Right now you should be able to use OBJ, MD5 and (soon) 3DS in Away3D 4.0, as well as the legacy AWD format.
As has been the topic of many posts on this list over the last couple of days, we are working on a replacement for the AWD format, which will still be called AWD (sometimes "AWD2") but except for the name is completely different. It's binary, extremely compact, supports compression and in terms of content can store both meshes, textures, animation and more. AWD2 is right now in development as a separate project than (but closely tied to) Away3D 4.0. You can follow it's progress at http://code.google.com/p/awd. It will not be locked down for a while, likely several months, but once it is it will be both forwards and backwards compatible. In the near future there are four exporters planned for AWD2; Maya, Blender, Cinema4D and of course Prefab3D. These will hopefully be released alongside the final version of Away3D 4.0. We intend to support 3dsmax as well but have chosen to focus on the other three right now for various reasons. The bottom line is that for now you should stick to OBJ or AWD1 (use Prefab to create the latter) for your content. But eventually it would be a wise move to switch to AWD which we intend to make the best file format for 3D content evah! :) Cheers /R On Feb 28, 6:18 pm, Darcey Lloyd <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi all, > > There seems to be a lot of confusion about getting 3D models into Away3D > with regards to what format, which application, what settings etc... > > Are there concrete ways of > > 1. converting a 3D Max file to a format Away3D supports with and without > textures? > 2. converting a Maya file to a format Away3D supports with and without > textures? > 3. converting a Blender file to a format Away3D supports with and without > textures? > > At the moment, I just say to the 3D graphics designer, here's a test > application (SWF) it accepts a file called "model.dae or model.md2" and tell > him / her to keep exporting their models till it displays correctly in the > SWF all I know is export triangles if there is an option for it and keep > image paths relative (no paths just file name). > > Now with the release Away3D 4.x the need for easy access to 3D models has > become more important than ever. > > So my questions are: > > 1.
