The following task has a new comment added:

FS#1034 - indicator support
User who did this - Daniel Silverstone (kinnison)

----------
"For me everything works as it is supposed to even without indicator support. I am
using gnome with awesome and I have a battery icon present in the tray, although, I do
not know, whether there shouldn't be anything else there."

I have it in whatever GNOME3 stuff is present in Ubuntu 11.10 and it vanished
when I upgraded to 12.04.

I have, since, written a simple app which presents as a systray icon so I can
have it back. However it did bring home to me that 'indicators' is an Ubuntu
thing, not anything quite so generic as a FD.o standard (yet)
