Seriously, this bit me too.  And I agree it's terrible of the ubuntu/gnome3 
camps.  I went to Xubuntu for this reason, to avoid some of the indicator 
stuff.  But this is not panacea either; xfce4-power-manager works well, but I 
have no volume control applet.  I'm torn between wanting awesome to integrate 
well with the prevailing winds (even if they're ill-conceived) or becoming more 
of a standalone island with all its own, native lua (or otherwise) 
applets/controls.  You can read plenty of gnome3 haters, btw.
